Dal progetto nacque il velivolo monoposto Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II. La versione V/STOL, denominata F-35B, è stato progettato per il decollo corto e latterraggio verticale, ideale per limpiego da portaelicotteri e piccole portaerei, ed è stato adottato dalle forze dei Marines degli Stati Uniti, dalla Royal Navy e dalle marine militari italiana e giapponese. The JSF Joint Strike Fighter program was set up to develop a new fifth-generation all-time multi-role fighter capable of providing a valid substitute for current US and NATO ground attack planes. The Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II single-seater was born from the project.
